After I drilled a large hole in the ice last week, I could see lots of 3 to 4" gizzard shad swimming around throughout the day.  In fact, there was not a moment where I did not see at least a dozen gizzard shad under me at all times.  Even the cracks in the pressure ridges had shad trapped up inside.  There were also quite a few small perch swimming around which is another good sign for the fishery.

Gizzard shad commonly reach a growth size of four inches after one year and the adults can range in lengths of 12 to 14 inches.  They are seldom caught on hook and line and feed mainly on many types of plankton and mud particles off the bottom of the lake.  They are very susceptible to rapid temperature changes and can have die-offs in the spring after ice out, especially the younger ones.  The big question is will that happen here this spring?
