COVID-19 Update
The fish are biting in Pierre. I had to go out by myself. If you can get here safely I can arrange an isolated fishing trip for you while your here.
Oahe Salmon
We got these two first thing yesterday morning down below my house on Lake Oahe. They are running around 5 pounds apiece. What a beautiful day. We had another one on that bent the rod down like a snag. It was hard to get out of the rod holder. After clearing the other two rods and hitting the boat out towards deeper water we fought the fish for about four minutes and he let go. Got another one after that. Enough for a nice meal for all of us.
Fish are biting in Pierre
This year with no rain or snow the water is really clear which is great. The bite varies from pitching jigs on the sandbars around Pierre in 5 to 8 feet versus jigging for walleye down south and west bend at 30 to 40 feet. Nice days with no wind are the best this time of year.
Winter is here
We had 8 to 12 inches of snow on the ground and it’s hard to get anywhere. Hundreds of pheasants are wintered up in the trees for the rest of the winter. We will start feeding them probably after the first of the year. The snow has crusted up all the cornfields and it looks we’re in for another one. My friend Jim from Montana came out and brought his great dogs for a winter hunt. He’s a lot tougher than I am trudging through crusty snow. His dogs toenails were bleeding some from the sharp snow as well. We left them alone in the tree belts and found just enough birds feeding in the snow filled hunting strips to get his limit each day.
Elk Hunt in New Mexico
One of the nicest gifts from my clients in 31 years of guiding. I was invited to go on a late season private ranch tag elk hunt with them in New Mexico. Everyone shot nice decent bulls. We saw tons of elk. It was a hunt of a lifetime and lots of fun!
South Dakota Deer Hunts
Sara got a decent buck opening weekend, not as big as the one she got last year but she only had two days to hunt and she was able to fill her tag. Michaela and Kyle hunted all three weekends and Michaela shot this beauty just south of the farm and Kyle got a doe the last weekend. Congrats to both.

20 Years of Friendship
This photo represents my last group and over 20 years of friendship between us. We need to get the younger generations interested in hunting. 12 years old is the minimum age to hunt in South Dakota for non-residents. This year I had two. One was younger than that and couldn’t buy a license
Great Day for a South Dakota Pheasant Hunt
Today’s Limits
Alaska Group
Our Alaska group enjoyed a blast and cast trip last week. The weather was a little cold and windy at times. Everyone shot lots of birds and at least caught one or two walleye. The river current in Pierre has gotten up to 92000 CFS and we are done fishing this year until it goes back down.
Early Thanksgiving South Dakota Duck Hunt
My relatives came to Pierre this weekend. We are having an early Thanksgiving. They are hunting on private land northeast of Pierre. They got their limits both days so far. Today is their last day.
Group from Kansas enjoyed a three day South Dakota pheasant hunt
This group of 11 from Atchison, Kansas area enjoyed a three day pheasant hunt at our farm last week. Some of them went duck hunting one morning. We had quite a few ducks around before Monday’s wind and rain.
Guided for the Outpost Lodge
I guided for the Outpost Lodge Thursday down on Lake Sharpe. We caught this nice mess of walleye. Two overs and some nice 17-19 inchers. All very healthy and growing.
