Big Cats caught in Oahe Tailrace
My livewell was stuffed with no room to spare. Twenty two 10# average catfish were caught by noon in the Oahe tailrace fast water. Each one was a battle to get in the boat in the fast current. Ground up Lake herring were coming thru the tailrace from Oahe above. It was a blast!
Lake Sharpe South Dakota Walleye June 25, 2016
Lake Oahe can be a pretty busy place this time of year so we decided to fish Lake Sharpe today, or should I say this morning. We showed up around 9 AM and were limited out with these beauties by 11 AM. We tried for some smallmouth bass but only caught more walleye so we bagged it for the day. Most of the fish were caught on bottom bouncers and slow death as always. We even caught and released other walleye on plugs after that. Like Oahe, there are plenty of small ones in Sharpe to release also.
Lake Oahe Walleye Smallmouth Limits June 23, 2015
We have been fishing crawlers in 6 to 8 feet of water. There is a good bite in certain places for either or both species, depending on the wind and water color. There are nice walleye being caught in deeper water also, especially in the Cheyenne River. One afternoon we caught them in 23.5 feet. The bite on Lake Oahe seems to be on one day and off the next.
Another Lake Oahe Limit by 1:00 PM June 10, 2015
Lake Oahe has been putting out walleyes at a rate of one per 5 minutes since the first of June. We are sorting walleyes off the hook from the time we start until we are limited out. There are walleye ranging from 14 inches up to 19 inches. There are also many smallmouth bass to catch as well. They fight as hard as any fish I know for their size. Many range from 14 to 17 inches.
Another 20 Nice Lake Oahe Walleye by 11:30 AM June 8, 2015
Today we tried another part of Lake Oahe, the Cheyenne river, almost. As a matter of fact it was windy and I had 4 people so I just went over to the windward shoreline across from Little bend and started trolling Berkley Flickershads in 11 feet and we had our fish in two hours.
Day two, A larger walleye catch on Lake Oahe June 6, 2015
More of the same. Lots of walleye. This time we decided to be a little more selective in what we kept. We probably kept and released around 40 for the day. We are fishing across from Bushs Landing in 4 to 6 feet of water.
Lake Oahe 20 walleye by 12:30 pm June 5, 2015
The walleyes are biting on crawlers and gulp in the back of the bays in 8 to 10 feet of water. Here is a photo of our catch. The bite is going on is just like the year 1995. I have a feeling a lot of people and guides may be struggling. Knowledge of the fishery is a must. I have 29 years experience on this lake which is a good thing to have when it comes to a year like this one.
Lake Oahe Monster Smallmouth Bass Fishing June 3, 2015
Another day of large smallmouth caught. Fisherman are missing out on some good action back in the bays this time of year. Lake Oahe has some of the best smallmouth bass in the state. This one was caught in Stove Creek.
Lake Oahe Walleye and Smallmouth Bass June 1, 2015
Here is a good catch of mostly Smallmouth Bass and a few walleyes in coming out of the Cheyenne River in 2 to 6 feet of water. The bass have not spawned yet and are active. We fished Rousseau Creek and Oak creek for the fish.
Lake Oahe Fishing Report, May 28, 2015
The walleyes are starting to go on Lake Oahe. We landed 20 Walleyes yesterday North of Whitlock Bay up around LeBeau boat ramp and across. Nine nice smallmouth were also caught. We caught them on bottom bouncer spinner minnows in 8 to 10 feet of water. The lake water is high and there’s lots of places walleyes could be so bring plenty of gas with you.
Lake Sharpe walleye fishing report May 22, 2015
Although there are still a few nice walleye left in Lake Sharpe, most are coming in under the minimum 15″ size limit. This nice 23″ walleye was caught in 13′ of water on a bottom bouncer minnow and orange rig float. Most are being caught within two miles of the West Bend boat ramp.
Limits of Walleye and Smallmouth bass
May 4th I was working for Hutch’s Guide service, these are his customers, 4 guys from Omaha, Nebraska. The fish were taken at West Bend in shallow water.
